Dumbbells by the pair, as a set or adjustable

Dumbbells are sold three ways in this range, and the way you buy them matters more than the brand on the end. A pair gives you one weight. A set gives you a run of weights on a rack. An adjustable set gives you many weights from two handles and a stack of plates. Each suits a different room and a different way of training.

Pairs

A pair is the right buy when you know the weight you need. The rubber hex pairs run from 1kg to 60kg per hand, with embossed kilogram markings and a chrome handle. The hex shape is the reason to choose them over round dumbbells: they do not roll when you set them down for renegade rows or between sets, and they stand on end for a push-up grip. The 15kg pair and the 27.5kg pair are where most people's pressing and rowing lands.

Neoprene and vinyl pairs run from 0.5kg to 10kg. The coating is soft, and they suit the lighter work: rehab, shoulder circuits, pilates and anything done for high reps. The 1.5kg neoprene pair and the 2kg vinyl pair are typical.

Sets on a rack

A set puts a graduated run of pairs on a rack so that the next weight up is always there. The 1kg to 10kg rubber hex set with a triangle rack is 110kg of dumbbells on a 15kg rack. The 1kg to 25kg set with a three-tier rack is 335kg of dumbbells. The 10kg to 40kg rubber round set with a two-tier rack is 455kg, and the 1kg to 50kg package with two racks is 790kg. The 1kg to 10kg chrome set with rack is the studio option at 110kg.

Those masses are the thing to plan around. A 455kg set is a rack that never moves again, on a floor that has to carry it, delivered as freight quoted by postcode. Sets suit a garage gym, a studio or a shared space where several people train and the weights have to be found without hunting.

Adjustable sets

An adjustable set is two handles, a stack of plates and spinlock collars. You build the weight you want and change it between exercises. The small sets, the 16kg and the 20kg, use 35cm to 40cm handles with 1.25kg and 2.5kg plates, and the 20kg set with a case packs away. The larger sets run from 30kg to 80kg in hammertone cast iron, and from 20kg to 60kg in rubber-coated plates, all on 2.5kg handles with 2.5kg and 5kg plates.

The stated set mass includes the handles, so a 60kg set is 55kg of plates on 5kg of handles, which is 30kg a hand fully loaded. An adjustable set is the smallest footprint and the lowest price per kilogram of anything here. The cost is time: changing plates between sets is slower than picking up the next pair.

Hammertone or rubber-coated

The plate sets come in two finishes. Hammertone is bare cast iron with a textured paint finish, and it is the cheaper option. Rubber-coated plates are the same iron with a rubber skin, which is quieter on the floor and kinder to it, and costs more per set. On a rubber tile floor either works. On timber or tiles, rubber-coated is the safer choice.

What to check on the product page

  • Whether the listing is a pair, a set on a rack, or an adjustable set, and the weight per hand rather than the total.
  • The full contents of a set, including how many plates of each size.
  • Rack size and the total mass, since both decide where the set can live.
  • Coating and handle finish.
